[What's the correct verbform for past tense]

Im having trouble writing in what i believe is called past tense. What is the
word for past tense in spanish? The sentences i'm writing is like: The spanish
"Seized" control over Cuba in ..... I'm using www.gedlc.ulpgc.es to help me with
the right form of the werb. Sorry 'bout my horrible atempt to describe my
problem, hope that someone understand my approach to the problem...

I'm not sure but i think that you want the translation of this sentence:

"The spanish "Seized" control over Cuba in ....."

"Los Españoles tomaron el control de Cuba en..."

I think that this is the best translation of the sentence, but the word "seized"
normally is translated like: "confiscado, robado"
