I have found a Norwegian badge, and googled the words and dates, and found one
website that I think might have some information. Not about the badge itself,
but about whats on the badge. If anyone can tell me what they are talking about
I would be very grateful. Here is the link.

It's a swedish site... and Norway is NOT the capital of Sweden. (as lots of US
citicens tend to believe )
The site is about "Svarta Bjørn", the nick name for a female cook working among
casual labourers building railway in northern part of Sweden and Norway.

have a nice day.

So Sorry for my ignorance. I know about Svarta Bjørn aka Anna Norge. I did find
that much in english on the internet. I was more interested in the center part
of the page where the dates 1898-1903 are found. I think this badge (made in
Norway) might have something to do with some kind of cooking contest held in
Norway and Sweden. The words on the badge are "Svarta Bjørn" across the top, and
"1898 Ofotenbanan 1903" at the bottom.

Here is the section I am interested in....

Ofotenbanan:

Gellivare - Kiruna - Narvik 1898 - 1903

Men i

700 exemplar!

Here follows a translation. But it's nothing about a cooking contest there.

No railway construction has done so much for the innovation and future of a
region as the Ofot railway - international border railway. J.E. Johansson has in
his book captured the drama and the harsh daily life of the workers. The central
character in the book is Svarta Bjørn. The legendary cook for the workers, whoms
life is filled with many and exiting legends.

A cook who could do housework and cooking was worth it's weight in gold for the
600 workers who builded the railway. Maybe that's why the mystery around S.Bjørn
was created. Did she exist, or was she just made up in those fantasies that was
made during the hard pioneer life? A railway worker's dream? What is legend and
reality, we may probably never know. But in the book of J.E. Johansson S.Bjørn
lives on as the legend from the time the railway was build.

The exiting book "Svarta Bjørn - Legend and Reality" has already been sold in
700 ex.!
