My Dad's late father was born in Norway 1st June 1913 and passed away on 3rd
December 1944 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

On his tombstone are the following words:

Holt var du elsket
Dypt er du savnet
Far soster & bror.

Can anyone give me a translation of this message, as my father was adopted
shortly after his father's death and we would like to understand the message.

You were higly loved
and you are deeply missed
Father, sister and brother

It's very common in Norway to write these sentences on tombstones.
